Jurgen Klopp has been handed another hammer blow ahead of his first game as Liverpool manager after Danny Ings was ruled out for the season.
The striker, who only made his full England debut on Monday in Lithuania, has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, the same injury that young full back Joe Gomez suffered playing for England’s Under 21s on Tuesday night.
Klopp confirmed that Gomez will be out for the season at his first weekly press conference at Melwood but it subsequently emerged that Ings, who has arguably been Liverpool’s standout player so far, was facing a similar absence.

It is a devastating setback for Ings. The 23-year-old was taking part in a routine session at Melwood on Wednesday when he was hurt in a challenge. He was taken for scans straight away when the news was confirmed and he will now have surgery next week, as will Gomez.
He was a player with whom Klopp was looking forward to working but the injury he sustained in the final minutes against Kazakhstan on Tuesday at the Ricoh Arena means he will now have to wait until next year to do that.
Gomez was able to hobble down the touchline when he was substituted straight away by England Under 21 boss Gareth Southgate. It was initially hoped the damage he had done was not too severe but the extent of the problem only came to light at Melwood.
